Where the Cliffs Breathe began with a view between Bonaventure Island and the distant shoreline of Percé, Québec.
I was drawn to the distance between the two shores — the openness of the water, the cliffs rising from the sea, and the birds moving through the space between them.
There was something about seeing these two places from afar, separated by so much water yet still belonging to the same horizon.
I left much of that space untouched in the composition. I wanted the painting to have the same sense of openness I felt there — quiet, expansive, and connected.
Sometimes distance creates connection.
