Where the Birds Gather was inspired by my journey to Bonaventure Island, Québec — a place where dramatic cliffs rise from the ocean and one of the world’s largest northern gannet colonies fills the air with movement and sound.
Before reaching the island, we circled its shoreline by boat, passing rugged rock formations, resting seals and sea lions, and waves of birds moving above the water. Later, after a long hike across the island with our 5-month-old baby, we arrived at the main colony, where the birds walked almost within arm’s reach and their calls completely drowned out our conversation.
This painting was born from that contrast — the wild, restless energy of the place and the unexpected stillness I felt within it.
Rather than documenting the landscape exactly as it appeared, the work focuses on the emotional memory of the experience: the openness of the sea, the weight of the cliffs, and the movement of birds gathering between land and sky.
For me, this painting holds both awe and tenderness — a memory of nature’s scale, and of experiencing it together as a family.
